How to Move the Temporary Files Location for CD Recording
When you copy files to CD with XP’s built-in CD recording feature, the files are copied first to a temporary location on the Windows partition. If you don’t have enough space for this on your Windows partition, you can move the location where the temp files are stored. Here’s how:
- First ensure that Windows is installed on an NTFS partition. If not, you’ll need to convert to NTFS before following the rest of these steps.
- Log on as an administrator.
- Insert a blank CD-R in the drive and open the drive in Windows Explorer. If there are files that are waiting to be written to CD, delete them.
- Click Start | Run and type cmd in the Run box. Click OK.
- At the command prompt, type set and press ENTER. This will list the environment variables.
- Note the path that’s listed for the USERPROFILE variable.
- In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance and then select Administrative Tools.
- Double click Computer Management (alternatively, you can right click My Computer and select Manage).
- Click Disk Management. In the console, find unallocated disk space on the disk where you want to put the temp files.
- Right click the unallocated space and select New Partition. This opens the New Partition Wizard.
- Follow the steps to create a primary partition, and make it at least 700 MB in size.
- Don’t assign a drive letter. Instead, mount the drive to this path: \Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning (” is the path that you noted in step 5).
- Accept NTFS as the file system and enter a volume label if you want to name the volume. Click Next.
- Click Finish. This creates a new partition that will be used to copy the temporary files now. This will only happen for the user account named in the user profile.
